How often do you brainstorm ideas with staff from across your utility?
At Pioneer, our editors, account managers, designers and other storytellers from across our co-op get together every week to discuss trends and swap ideas.
This summer marks the one-year anniversary of “Thought Leadership Thursday,” a roundtable discussion created to build cross-team idea sharing and help us better serve our members. The weekly meetings focus on intentional thought leadership, strategic communication and collaborative planning.
“Our members are at the heart of all we do, so when they came to us asking for help with strategic communications and thought leadership, we got to work,” says Pioneer’s Director of Accounts Sarah Lancaster. “Thought leadership is about offering the most valuable insights, sparking innovation and fostering meaningful connections. It makes you think differently and challenge the status quo to make sure content is fresh, resonates with your audience and gets results.”
Why we love Thought Leadership Thursday:
1. Intentional brainstorms
The meeting was born out of a desire to provide Pioneer members with cutting-edge insights, trends and creative content that gets results. Dedicating time each week to explore new ideas and strategies helps us stay ahead of the curve. This intentional focus on thought leadership helps us deliver valuable content that educates, inspires and empowers our members to make informed decisions and get more out of their marketing efforts.
2. Strategic planning
Being intentional about thought leadership requires a strategic approach to communication and planning. Every Thursday we pick topics that reflect member interests and needs. We highlight specific marketing trends and discuss those in depth. This helps keep our content relevant, timely and impactful. Additionally, planning these sessions allows us to align our messaging with our overall mission––serving so our members can shine.
3. Collaboration breeds creativity
One big benefit is the collaboration a weekly meeting fosters across many departments. Bringing diverse teams together helps us tap into a wealth of knowledge and creativity. Marketing, sales, design, editorial, social media and leadership all come together to contribute unique views. Cross-departmental collaboration enriches our content and strengthens our co-op’s culture.
4. Servant leadership shines
Regular brainstorming meetings not only help strengthen storytelling, they create leadership opportunities. At Pioneer, staff members gain experience by leading sessions. Meetings become a training ground for growth as team members hone presentation and leadership skills.

At its core, Thought Leadership Thursday helps us serve our members better. By consistently providing high-quality, thought-provoking content we help our members stay informed and inspired. Whether it’s through blog posts, marketing campaigns, event planning or social media strategy, our goal is to bring added value to the content we produce for our members. This commitment to service excellence enhances member satisfaction and loyalty, fostering a thriving relationship.
One key takeaway from this year of Thought Leadership Thursdays?
Innovation isn’t a one-time event, it’s a constant conversation.
By setting aside an hour each week for thought leadership, we’re harnessing the power of continuous learning, brainstorming and sharing ideas. Cross-team ideas sharing results in stronger storytelling, creative content and campaigns and a companywide commitment to working together that extends beyond Thursdays.
