Craig Reed
Freelance Writer
Speaker, StoryConnect
After a four+ decade career in newspaper storytelling, Craig has a knack for finding stories. He retired from the Roseburg, Oregon-based News-Review in 2017, but began his freelancer career long before he quit his full-time gig. As a freelance writer for the last 25 years, he writes features for four local editions of Ruralite magazine (Douglas Electric Cooperative, Lane Electric, Midstate Electric Cooperative and Blachly-Lane Electric Co-op) and the Salem-based agricultural newspaper the Capital Press.
“I never had a desire to move to a bigger paper and city. I like knowing my community. Makes finding stories for myself and new reporters easier,” Craig says. “My four co-ops would probably tell you they appreciate having a veteran journalist who they can trust to highlight their members.”
Craig graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Liberal Arts and an emphasis in Journalism. Then he began his career at the News-Review. His worked one year as sportswriter, then 30 years as sports editor. His storytelling left the field when he took on the features editor role, writing business, outdoors and personality articles, and coordinating and writing special sections. He ended his newspaper career as managing editor of a 15-person newsroom.
