Wildfires mean possible power shut-offs and concerned consumers. Are you ready to tell your story if things get heated?

The first Saturday of May marks Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. To support the shared storytelling need of so many Utility Pioneers, Pioneer’s rolling out a wildfire communications toolkit, free for all utilities to use.

“As a communications co-op, we’re always looking for ways to support shared storytelling needs in our industry,” says Becky Mashburn, vice president of member experience at Pioneer. “When I worked at co-ops in Colorado, I saw firsthand how critical it was to get the right information out— and out fast—when fire danger was high. Working together, we can help you keep your consumers informed and your communities safe.”

When wildfire season approaches, clear, timely communication is critical. Pioneer’s Wildfire Communications Kit gives you the know-how and materials to keep your community informed before, during and after a wildfire.

Pioneer’s Wildfire Communications Toolkit Includes:

1. Infographic: Consumer-facing tips for how to protect your family, home and land. Use as a stand-alone handout or repurpose for your magazine, newsletter, website and social media.

2. Social Media Posts

  • 12 prewritten and designed posts: preparedness (4), response (4) and recovery (4).
  • Educational tips designed to help you keep your members safe.
  • Ready to use for Facebook, X, Instagram and other platforms.

3. Educational Article: Preparing for Wildfire Season/Preventing Wildfire Spread

  • Ready-to-use content that can be featured in your newsletter, website or blog
  • Covers key wildfire safety tips and preparedness measures for consumers.
  • Outlines steps taken by your utility.

4. News Release: A customizable news release to let local media know about the potential or immediate need to implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

5. Draft Member Emails

  • Wildfire Preparedness Email: Educate your members on how to prepare for wildfire threats.
  • Public Safety Power Shutoff Email: Communicate the need and potential of a PSPS.

All of these resources, available in DropBox, can be repurposed on multiple channels. Pioneer is providing these resources for unrestricted use by any utility, no attribution needed.
